Volunteer with Honoring Choices
Volunteers are always welcome to help Honoring Choices promote the benefits of Advance Care Planning.
Ambassadors: receive training to give talks about ACP to groups in the community. You must be comfortable talking to large groups, have familiarity with using a Powerpoint presentation (which we provide), commit to doing a minimum of 3 presentations per calendar year, and commit to attending at least 2 informational meetings for Ambassadors per calendar year. We ask for a three-year commitment to the role before providing the training, which includes a 4-hour orientation session and shadowing an experienced Ambassador at two events.
Facilitators: individuals who have successfully completed the Respecting Choices First Steps Facilitation curriculum can volunteer to meet one-on-one with people seeking assistance in completing their healthcare directive. Proof of Facilitator Certification is required, as well as attendance at the Ambassador orientation and shadowing an experienced Facilitator at one facilitation session. Individuals must demonstrate skills of compassion, listening, communication and knowledge of ACP, as well as commit to a three-year period of volunteering. The exact number of facilitated sessions you will have will vary based on requests coming in to the Honoring Choices office, but it is expected that you will conduct at least three per year.
Event Assistance: Each July we hold an ACP Conference, and volunteers are needed to help with the registration, sales tables, logistics, and other tasks to keep the event running smoothly. In addition, occasional events held at other times during the year may require the presence of volunteers to hand out promotional materials, assemble mailings, direct participant traffic, etc.
Miscellaneous: Occasionally we have need of help with a specific project. Examples of past projects have included internet research on a specific topic, sitting on a task force to update materials or create new materials, solicit donations for door prizes, provide photographic or video coverage of an event, etc.

Advance Care Planning Speakers
Honoring Choices is always interested in events designed to increase awareness of Advance Care Planning (ACP). Speakers are available at no cost to share what ACP is, why it is important, and how to begin.
These events can take place in any public place – at a professional meeting site, a library, your workplace, community center or other venue. Led by trained Honoring Choices volunteers, individuals of all ages and backgrounds can learn and discuss together. Audience members learn how to begin the conversation, what to consider in choosing a health care agent (also sometimes referred to as an advocate, surrogate, or proxy), how to complete a health care directive, and much more!
Honoring Choices offers:
- Advance Care Planning 101: a 30-minute presentation followed by 30 minutes of questions and answers to help people learn the basics about what ACP is and how to begin. We provide informational handouts and blank copies of health care directives to let people start the ACP process. We also share information about where and how to get additional assistance if needed.
- Advance Care Planning 102: sometimes one session just isn’t enough. ACP 102 is a follow-up to ACP 101, and is led by certified ACP Facilitators who can take the discussion to a deeper level, or meet with people one-on-one to guide them through the specifics of completing a health care directive. Usually 30-90 minutes; arranged based on group specifics.
- Advance Care Planning for Health Care Professionals: This talk is given by health care professionals and contains more clinical information about how and why health care providers should talk with their patients and clients about ACP. Perfect for an inservice or lunch-and-learn, the exact agenda will be determined to fit the needs of your situation.
- Facilitation: Many health care providers offer this service free of charge, but if yours does not, Honoring Choices has a crew of certified ACP Facilitators who will meet with you and your loved ones to walk you through the process of completing your health care directive.
- Conferences, Info Fairs, Expos: We love to host a table offering information and informal conversations with your attendees.
